Tree-clearing restrictions are land-use/district and development-context dependent; no one blanket private-yard rule is established.
The local rule
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo uses land-use rules that restrict tree cutting or clearing in certain environmental and development contexts.
Those controls depend on the land-use district and proposed activity, so they should not be simplified into a universal private-tree permit rule for every residential lot.
Before work starts
- Ownership: check the property line. Public and boundary trees may follow a different process.
- Site context: review any development approval, covenant or protected-area conditions.
- Work requirements: confirm any permit, exemption or protection requirements that apply to the planned work.
