Public-tree rules plus elm-specific private-tree duties; no blanket private-yard removal permit.
The local rule
Medicine Hat’s Tree Preservation Bylaw is focused on public trees: residents cannot damage, prune or remove a public tree without the City process.
The current City page does not establish a general permit for every ordinary private-property tree removal.
Elm trees are a specific exception: the City says owners must keep elms free of dead or dying wood, pruning is restricted from April 1 through September 30 unless authorized, and a City arborist must approve removal and disposal of any elm tree in Medicine Hat.
Before work starts
- Ownership: check the property line. Public and boundary trees may follow a different process.
- Site context: review any development approval, covenant or protected-area conditions.
- Work requirements: confirm any permit, exemption or protection requirements that apply to the planned work.
